Additional Canine Unit

Second Canine Unit for Belleville Police Service announced

The Belleville Police Service is pleased to announce the establishment of a second Canine Unit.

Scheduled to deploy in 2024, this enhancement further strengthens a commitment to ensure safety and security of our community.

This endeavour would not have been possible without incredible partnerships with local supporters, businesses and industry.

"Our community has always been our greatest ally in our mission to maintain public safety," said Belleville Police Chief Mike Callaghan.

"The addition of our second Canine Unit is a testament to the power of partnerships and highlights our collaborative efforts in fostering a safer community. We are deeply grateful for the support we have received from our sponsors in the form of major donations to move this project ahead. This has allowed us to enhance our resources and service to the residents of Belleville. "

Since re-establishing the program in 2020, current Canine Officer Const. Jesse McInroy and partner Bax have played a vital role in law enforcement and public safety, Callaghan added.

The additional unit will significantly enhance the capacity of the service to respond to emergencies, investigate crimes, and provide specialized support to our dedicated law enforcement personnel.

“These highly trained dogs and operators offer a unique set of capabilities,” Callaghan explained. “They assist our officers in a variety of tasks including narcotics detection, search and rescue operations, tracking missing persons, and apprehending dangerous suspects.”

As well, the Canine Unit is utilized in many presentations to community groups and during education sessions with youth within our community.

In the coming weeks additional details will be released to acknowledge donors and supporters of this grass-roots community initiative.
