Is registration open to all residential and non-residential properties?

Registration is available to businesses within the City Belleville and applies only to businesses and is not for residential properties.

Why should I register?

Registration enables police to be able to contact you or your nominated key holders in the event of an incident occurring on your property or if your alarm is causing a noise nuisance. The police have a responsibility to act on noise nuisance and property owners could potentially incur costs from forced entry if they are unable to contact a key holder.

Are my property details secure?

Yes. Any information recorded through this program is fully secure and only accessible to police in an official capacity when dealing with an incident on your property.

What are the benefits of registering?

As well as peace of mind, you will be able to update your information as often as you like instantly by logging into the Belleville Police Service web site. Any changes you make are instantly updated by police in a secure data base within the Belleville Police Service. Police recommend no more than 3 key holders for one property however you can have as many as you like.

How long does my registration last?

Registrations remain in our system indefinitely as long as you are in business. If your circumstances change you must submit another form informing us of any new details. Please mark the form as AMENDED after entering the Business Name.This is mainly to ensure that all information held in the service is always kept up to date.

What are my responsibilities as a key holder?

First you must ensure that you are contactable in the event of police need you to attend the business:

  1. Ensure that you are available by telephone.
  2. Notify police, through this web site, of any change of address and/or your contact numbers. This is vital information for the Key Holder Database to function properly.
  3. You must able to attend the property in a reasonable amount of time.
  4. You are also responsible for securing the property and to do this, you will need to know how the alarm system works (if there is an alarm), the alarm PIN numbers, entry and exit routes et

As the key holder when and I am called to the property, what will I be expected to do?

In the event police call you, as a key holder, you will be expected to do the following:

  1. Attend the premises without delay with the property keys
  2. If the Police are in attendance, make yourself known to them and assist them as necessary.
  3. If an alarm is sounding turn the alarm off soon as possible
  4. Allow the police to check that the building is clear. Ensure that there is no damage to the property. If repairs do need to be carried out, then it is your responsibility to organize that e.g. calls to a locksmith.
  5. Finally, when the property is safe to leave, secure the property.
