Motor Vehicle Collision on Sidney Street at Tracey Street
On the 27th of September 2023 at 8:47 am, Belleville Police responded to a call regarding an intimate partner dispute at a residence in the city’s west end. Police investigation revealed that the male currently at the residence was on conditions not to have communication with a female who resides there.
The male had departed the residence on foot when police initially arrived. Police searched the area and observed the suspect in the driver’s seat of a vehicle. Police attempted to stop the vehicle on Cascade Blvd however the vehicle fled in an attempt to evade police. Police engaged in a very short pursuit before terminating it due to public safety. The vehicle was last observed on Parkdale Drive.
Police remained in the area as did the suspect vehicle. A short time later, the vehicle was observed near the intersection of Lemoine Street and Maple Drive when it intentionally drove into a fully marked cruiser with an officer sitting inside while parked near the intersection. The vehicle continued onto Sidney Street and proceeded northbound. Police were not pursuing the vehicle. The suspect vehicle then collided with an unrelated vehicle which was driving east bound crossing Sidney Street towards Tracey Street. The suspect vehicle then left the roadway and struck a traffic light pole where it finally came to rest.
Paramedics attended to the scene. No injuries were reported to the occupants of the unrelated vehicle and the suspect reported minor injuries. The police officer who was in the cruiser when it was struck was not injured. Both vehicles involved in the collision on Sidney Street were towed from the scene.
Police have arrested and charged a 41-year-old male from Whitby. The suspect is currently on eight separate Canada Wide driving prohibition orders. As a result, the male has been charged with eight counts of driving while prohibited, dangerous driving, flight from police, three counts of breaching a court order, impaired operation of a motor vehicle by drug and numerous infractions under the Highway Traffic Act. The male has been held for bail.
Police continue to speak with numerous witnesses who were identified throughout this incident and the investigation is continuing.
