The Belleville Police Service responded to 67 calls for service from July 31st, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. to August 1st, 2020 at 5:00 a.m.
Theft from Vehicles
Belleville, ON – On July 31st, 2020 police received some calls from residents on Donald Street regarding overnight vehicle break-ins. Police advise that a unknown suspect(s) had entered some cars parked in residence driveways removing small change and any other items of worth. No suspects were identified. Theft & Trespass
Belleville, ON – On July 31st, 2020 at approximately 11:30am, city police attended Canadian Tire on Bell Boulevard in regards to a male in the area possibly in the possession of stolen items from the store. Police made contact with a 39-year-old Belleville resident who police found attempted to remove a small butane refill canister from the store without paying for the item.
Police charged the gentleman with Engaging in Unlawful Activity under the Ontario Trespass to Property Act and escorted him off the property.
Motor Vehicle Collision with Minor Injury
Belleville, ON – On July 31st, 2020 at approximately 12pm, city police attended the area of Scuttlehole Road and Bronk Road in Thurlow Township in regards to a single motor vehicle collision.
Police report that a 23-year-old female driver from Thurlow Township swerved her vehicle on Scuttlehole Road to avoid hitting an animal on the roadway. The victim’s automobile left the roadway striking a utility pole causing some serve damage to the vehicle and damage to the utility pole as well. The female driver sustained minor neck injuries and city EMS was dispatched to the scene and treated the victim at that location. Although city crews had to attend to repair the utility pole, there were no reports of any hydro power loss to any residents in the area. The driver’s vehicle had to be removed from the scene via recovery tow. There were no charges laid.
Motor Vehicle Collision – Carless Driving
Belleville, ON – On July 31st, 2020 at approximately 2:45pm, city police attended the area of Sidney Street and Bridge Street West in regards to a single motor vehicle collision. Original calls that police received reported that the vehicle was on fire and Belleville Fire Dept were dispatched to the scene as well as city EMS.
When police arrived on scene, it was found that the vehicle was not on fire but did leave the roadway and struck a tree. The officers found that the male driver appeared to have suffered an obvious broken hand. The victim was transported to Belleville General Hospital via city EMS to be treated for his injury.
The investigation revealed that the 38-year-old male driver was the cause of his own demise and was subsequently charged with Careless Driving under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. The vehicle was severely damaged and had to be removed from the scene via recovery tow.
Assault with a Weapon
Belleville, ON – On July 31st, 2020 at approximately 5:30pm, police were notified of an assault where a male may have been stabbed. City police attended a rooming house on Moira Street West regarding the complaint and found a 41-year-old man suffering from some minor stab wounds to the abdomen. The investigation revealed that the two involved parties lived in the same building and were known to one another. Both men had been drinking together when some sort of argument broke out and the victim suffered minor injuries. City EMS attended the scene and transported the victim to Belleville General hospital to have his injuries treated. He was later released from the hospital.
The accused, Belleville resident, 46-year-old John Reilly was arrested and charged with one count of Assault with a Weapon and one count of Assault Causing Bodily Harm. The accused was later released on his own recognizance with strict conditions and is scheduled to appear at the Belleville Ontario Court of Justice on September 3rd, 2020 to answer to his charges.
