The Belleville Police Service responded to 81 calls from May 20th 2020 at 5:00 a.m. to May 21st 2020 at 5:00 a.m.

“Scam Alert”

Belleville, ON – The Belleville Police would like to caution its citizens of a scam that was reported in the city a number of times last summer and has now been reported again yesterday evening. 

Scammers will approach would be victims generally at gas stations asking for help with cash money.  The scammer will advise that they have lost their wallet and all of their money and request help from generous victims for cash.  The scammer will offer what appears to be high-end jewelry as collateral which turns out to be fake inexpensive cosmetic jewelry.  The latest victim lost approximately $200.00 cash. 

Belleville Police are advising residents to be cautious if your asked for assistance in similar circumstances where some sort of collateral is offered in exchange.  It’s most likely fraudulent. 

If you find yourself in this situation, police are asking you to contact Belleville Police and report any information as to suspect vehicle description and plate numbers and any physical descriptors of suspect(s). 

Fireworks – Noise By-Law

The Belleville Police Service has received numerous calls over the past week regarding fireworks being set off in different parts of the city.  City police responded to eleven different locations last night alone.  The Belleville Police would like to remind city residents that setting off fireworks or any explosive ordinance is prohibited within city    limits without a permit.  The Belleville Police understands that generally, these acts are committed in the spirit of fun and celebration but the high call volume created involving these incidents ties up police resources unnecessarily.  Police are simply requesting residents to use good judgement in these matters and to respect the noise by-law for all citizens by refraining from setting off fireworks within the city.  Your cooperation regarding this is greatly appreciated by your local police service. 

Uttering Death Threats

Belleville, ON – On May 20th, 2020 at approximately 1:00 p.m., a construction worker was working downtown on Front St. loading drywall when he was approached aggressively by another male not known to him.  The suspect presented aggressive posturing but no assault occurred.  The suspect did however threaten to kill the victim which was not provoked in any manner.  The victim gave the responding officers a description of the suspect who fled the scene prior to their arrival.  City officers flooded the area with numerous police units and were able to locate the suspect a few blocks North on Front St. 

Forty-Three-year-old, Aaron Edwards of Belleville was arrested for Uttering Death Threats.  The accused was later released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to attend the Belleville Ontario Court of Justice on July 16th 2020 to answer to his charge.  

Trespass to Property

Belleville, ON – On May 20th, 2020 at 1:00 p.m., city police responded to a South West residence in regards to a male suspect hanging out on the front door step of the complainant’s home.  The complainant advised police that he did not know the suspect and that the suspect refused to leave when asked. 

Officers arrested a 49-year-old Belleville man for trespassing and charged him for Failing to Leave the Property When Directed by the owner under the Ontario Trespass to Property Act.  The suspect was removed from the complainant’s property and released. 

Drug Trafficking Arrest

Belleville, ON – On May 20th, 2020 at approximately 2:15 p.m., a gentleman contacted the police because a male and female whom the complainant did not know, walked into his apartment and started consuming illegal narcotics.  City police attended the South East apartment complex and found the suspects present. 

A 36-year-old male from Belleville was taken into custody on drug related charges.  The female was released unconditionally. The male suspect was not released and is being held on the following charges;

  • Possession of Fentanyl for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possession of Crystal Meth for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Property Obtained by Crime
  • Breach of Probation

The male suspect will be brought before a Justice this morning for a Show Cause Hearing scheduled at 11am at the Belleville Ontario Court of Justice.

Motor Vehicle Collision – No Licence

Belleville, ON – On May 20th, 2020 at 8:30 p.m., city police attended the intersection of Albert St. and Bridge St. E. regarding a motor vehicle collision.  There was no injuries and moderate damage to the vehicles but the investigation revealed that the driver of one of the vehicles involved did not have a driver’s licence.  A 33-year-old Belleville woman was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a Driver’s Licence under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and her vehicle was towed from the scene. 

Breach of the Peace

Belleville, ON – On may 20th, 2020 at approximately 11:15 p.m., city police dispatch received a 911 hang up call.  Upon call back, dispatchers could hear some sort of disturbance in the background.  Police were able to triangulate the 911 call location and attended the West Hill residence.  Police entered the residence due to the commotion heard from outside the home and found a female and male inside.  The officers attempted to bring some sort of calm to the situation however were unsuccessful as the male party was completely out of control damaging the property in the residence. 

Officers had no choice but to apprehend the gentlemen for Breach of the Peace and transported him to the Belleville Police Service.  The 30-year-old male was later released unconditionally after he had time to calm down in the cells.  Upon release, the male party was cooperative with police.  There was no assault or injuries sustained by either party involved in this matter. 

Motor Vehicle Collision – Fail to Remain

Belleville, ON – On May 20th, 2020 at 11:30 p.m., city police were called to the intersection of Pinnacle St. and Bridge St. E. regarding a motor vehicle collision.  Police were advised by one of the involved driver’s that the other driver and vehicle fled the scene immediately after the collision occurred. 

The other vehicle involved is described as a white van or suv with significant front-end damage.  If anyone may have witnessed this motor vehicle collision or see’s or knows the whereabouts of this suspect vehicle, they are asked to contact the Belleville Police Service at 613-966-0882 ext 2211.
