Man fined under Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act
Belleville ON- On 5 April 2020, at 6:35 p.m., Belleville Police Service received multiple calls regarding a gathering of a large group of people in the parking lot of a business on Millennium Parkway. As officers arrived, they observed approximately 25 people gathered in close quarters around their vehicles smoking and socializing. Police spoke with the group who was willfully ignoring social distancing laws, and there were several members of the group who were not receptive to police attempts to educate the group regarding the dangers of large gatherings. As a result, a 21-year-old Belleville man, who identified himself to officers as the organizer of the group, was charged with failing to comply with an order made during a declared emergency contrary to the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act. The rest of the group was cautioned and directed to leave the property.
Breach of Peace
Belleville ON, On 5 April 2020, at 9:15 p.m., Belleville Police received a call about a disturbance at an apartment building in the West end. Police were advised that a male was in a parking lot yelling for the police to come. On arrival, officers were met by a man who advised he was being attacked in his apartment and being chased. After speaking with the male, police determined the man to be under the influence of drugs. Police were unable to prevent the 49-year-old Belleville from continuing to disturb the residents of the building; therefore, he was arrested. The man was later released unconditionally.
