Hydro pole struck, tractor-trailer driver charged

A cyclist pedaling through one of the city’s busiest intersections called police after the driver of a tractor-trailer clipped a hydro pole and left the scene Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at the intersection of College and North Front Streets. The female driver of a tractor-trailer struck a hydro pole, which pulled down some hydro lines. The driver left the scene without stopping.

A cyclist watched the incident occur and an employee of a nearby business also called in to police and the city’s public works department to assist with road closures, given the situation.

Officers located the vehicle at a business on Sidney Street and found it had sustained minor damage. The 28-year-old female motorist was charged with making an improper turn under the Highway Traffic Act.

A portion of the roadway was shut down Thursday afternoon so crews could repair the pole. There were no injuries reported.
