Total calls for service – Belleville Police responded to 68 calls for service over a 24-hour period beginning at 5:00 am on May 18, 2023 to 5:00 am on
Arson
On the 18th of May 2023 at 10:45am, Belleville Police and Belleville Fire attended an address on Front Street for a report of a fire. An investigation began between both agencies and it was determined that a male had intentionally set a blanket on fire and placed it on top of a nearby gas meter. The nearby building was occupied when the fire was set and both police and fire are thankful no one was injured.
Belleville Police continued the investigation and at 1:15pm, police located and arrested the suspect. A 35-year-old male of No Fixed Address was charged with Arson and two counts of failing to comply with his Probation Order. The male was held for a bail hearing.
Fire at suspected homeless encampment
On the 19th of May 2023 at 2:30a.m., Belleville Police and Belleville Fire responded to the area of Dundas St E and Haig Rd after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a large fire in the area.
Firefighters located an old barn near Old Kingston Rd that was completely engulfed and partially collapsed. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and no injuries were reported.
Investigation showed that persons may have been using the barn as part of a homeless encampment.
Police and Fire are continuing to investigate how the fire started.
Sexual Assault
On the 8th of December 2022, members of the Belleville Police Service Uniform Patrol and Criminal Investigations Division began an investigation into a Sexual Assault allegation at a residence in the east end of Belleville.
On the 10th of May, members of the Criminal Investigations Division with the assistance of the Peel Regional Police Service executed a search warrant at a residence in Mississauga.
As a result of the investigation, on the 10th of May 2023 a thirty-five-year-old male from Mississauga was charged with:
1. Sexual assault on a person under the age of 16
2. Sexual interference
3. Assault,
4. Bestiality
5. Utter forged document
6. Assault with a weapon
7. Mischief under $5000
8. Administer noxious thing
Further, an arrest warrant has been sought for a 2nd suspect, a fifty-nine-year-old Mississauga resident for the offences of:
1. Assault
2. Bestiality
3. Sexual assault on a person under the age of 16
4. Sexual interference
The thirty-five-year old male whose name is not being released to protect the identity of the victim was held for a bail hearing.
