Total calls for service – Belleville Police responded to 72 calls for service over a 24-hour period beginning at 5:00 am on April 27, 2023 to 5:00 am on April 28, 2023.

Warrants

On Thursday April 27, 2023 around 7 p.m., a 31-year-old Belleville man was spotted near the downtown core who was known to have an outstanding warrant issued by the Ontario Provincial Police.

When officers attempted to arrest the male, he took off on foot. Following a brief chase the male was apprehended and later in the evening turned over to the OPP.

Impaired drivers

Belleville Police would like to extend a thank you to the public for helping get a couple of potential impaired drivers off the road earlier this week.

The first call came in from staff at a local fast food restaurant shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday April 27, 2023. The employees were concerned due to the smell of alcohol emanating from a vehicle after serving a female customer who pulled through the drive-thru.

When officers arrived, the woman was in her vehicle passed out in the parking lot. A beer can was observed inside the cup holder of the vehicle as well.

The female refused a demand for a sample of her breath for analysis and was subsequently arrested.

Charged with refusing a breath demand is Candice Valyear, 40, of Quinte West. She was released with a court date of the 15th of May 2023.

Under the Criminal Code, drivers who refuse to provide a breath sample to a police officer when pulled over or under suspicion of impaired driving can be charged with refusing a demand, which carries the same penalty as impaired driving.

In the second incidnent, around noon police were called by a motorist who was following a vehicle on Coleman Street that was ‘all over the road’ as it headed north towards Moira Street.

The vehicle pulled into the parking lot of a local business, where officers caught up to the male driver, who was still in the vehicle.

Charged with impaired driving is Alexander Robertson, 28, of Belleville. He was released with a court date of May 18, 2023.

The Belleville Police Service would like to thank the public for their assistance in both of these matters.

If you observe a motorist who you believe to be impaired, please call 911 or police. It is not an offence to call 911 using a cell phone while driving.
