Total calls for service – Belleville Police responded to 66 calls for service over a 24-hour period beginning at 5:00 am on the 2^nd of May, 2022 to 5:00 am on the 3 ^rd of May, 2022.

Fraud Alert

Belleville Police are warning elderly citizens of a new scam circulating the area.  Belleville Police have responded to several calls in the last few days, in some cases with unsuspecting victims turning over thousands of dollars to fraudsters.  The scam involves a phone call claiming to be the victim’s grandson who has been arrested and requires money to be bailed out of jail.  The victim is then provided with a phone number to a phony lawyer who states they need a cash deposit for as much as $10,000 to get the grandson out of jail.  The unknown victim retrieves the cash and advises the lawyer.  The new twist in this scam is that the phony lawyer tells the victim that a bail bondsman will be attending the victim’s residence at an arranged time to pick up the money.  In these recent incidents, an unknown suspect appears in person at the victim’s home, claiming to be the bail bondsman, and the victim turns over the cash.  In these incidents, the fraudsters are persuasive and may know specific details about the victim.  Belleville Police remind the public to question if unknown people are asking you to turn over large sums of money.  Also, that there is currently no commercial business of bail bondsman or bail insurance system in Canada.

Domestic Assault

On the 2^nd of May 2022 at 1130am, Belleville Police attended an east-end parking lot regarding a domestic incident in a vehicle.  An ambulance attended after a female had been seen by a witness being thrown out of a parked vehicle which caused minor injuries to her face.  The male driver of the vehicle was arrested.  As a result of the investigation, a 35-year-old Belleville resident was charged with domestic assault and later released on an undertaking with a court date of the 30^th of May 2022.  Due to the domestic nature of the incident, the accused’s name will not be released to protect the identity of the victim.

Domestic Assault – Warrants

On the 3^rd of May 2022 at 1230am, Belleville Police attended an east-end residence regarding a domestic disturbance.  Officers learned that a male occupant had assaulted the female occupant causing minor injuries and had fled the scene prior to police arrival.  Officers located the male a few blocks away and he was arrested.  The male was also found to be wanted on outstanding warrants for possession of stolen property, failing to attend for fingerprints and failing to attend court.  In addition, the 39-year-old Belleville resident was charged with domestic assault and breach of probation.  He was held for a bail hearing on the 3^rd of May 2022. Due to the domestic nature of the incident, the accused’s name will not be released to protect the identity of the victim.
