"Safety on Sidney" - Traffic Safety Initiative

The Belleville Police Service Traffic Safety Unit conducted a traffic safety initiative called “Safety on Sidney”. The initiative ran from December 5th, 2022 until December 9th, 2022.
The Traffic Safety Unit focused enforcement on Sidney Street, between College Street West and Cascade Boulevard. This initiative was conducted due to complaints from crossing guards and parents who reported speeding vehicles and drivers not stopping for school busses. This section of Sidney Street consists of alternating amber lights notifying motorists of a 40km/hr speed limit while flashing.

While conducting enforcement in the area, the Traffic Safety Unit also found increased speeds in the area of north Sidney Street, from Millennium Park Way to Vermilyea Road.

A total of 47 charges were laid including a driver caught on their cell phone, a school bus driver speeding 81km/hr in a 60km/hr zone, two drivers with suspended licences and one driver charged for stunt driving who was speeding 93km/hr in the 40km/hr zone. That driver had their licence suspended for 30 days and their vehicle was impounded for 14 days. Speeding was the most enforced offence throughout the week.

The Belleville Police Service Traffic Safety Unit want to remind drivers to drive the posted speed limit and always drive with due care and attention.
