Total calls for service – Belleville Police responded to 81 calls for service over a 24-hour period beginning at 5:00 am on June 05, 2023 to 5:00 am on June 06, 2023.

Rental Property Scam

On June 5^th 2023, a Belleville resident attended the Belleville Police Service reporting that she was the victim of a rental property scam.

In late May 2023, the victim was searching for a rental apartment in the Kitchener, ON area.  The victim responded to a Facebook Market Place add and shortly thereafter made two payments for a total of nearly $3,000 by way of money transfer.  Following the payments, the victim suddenly was unable to get ahold of the seller. 

The victim had an acquaintance in the Kitchener area attend the apartment address and speak to the current tenants.  It was learned that the apartment was not for rent and the Market Place add was a scam. 

Police are reminding residents to be vigilant for scams and to complete as much research on property rentals in advance of any exchange of money to include never rent sight-unseen, attempt to meet the landlord in person and speak with current tenants.
